  • Everyone (mostly) loves when the lupine are in bloom. They cover roadsides and hillsides in royal colors for a couple of weeks in June, signifying that summer is actually here. But I always find them incredibly difficult to photograph successfully. So a few things I'm learning. First, catch them in transition. The tonal gradation as they fully bloom is interesting. Second, isolate them. The fields full of them are cool, but I prefer them pulled away from the mass. And third, get the leaves! The leaves form a fascinating contrast to the long and lanky blooms, laid out flat, broad and star-shapped as they are. They are a fascinating subject all by themselves. These were taken alongside the Duluth Vineyard church about a week a go.

  • I made a little visit to the Duluth Rose Garden this morning, a place I hadn't been in a long time. These purple and white irises especially caught my eye. Breathtaking. "Not even Solomon in all his glory...."
